On Thursday afternoon, a technical meeting was held between Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to discuss the implementation of preventive projects in high-risk areas across Afghanistan.
The meeting was attended by Mr. Burhanuddin Shinwari, Head of International Relations, Mr. Syed Ahmad Osmani, Secretary of ANDMA’s leadership, and Mr. Hamed Burhan, IOM’s Disaster Risk Reduction Officer.
At the outset, Mr. Burhanuddin Shinwari expressed gratitude for IOM’s continuous cooperation and assistance, highlighting the organization’s vital role in supporting vulnerable and affected communities. He emphasized the need to further expand collaboration between the two entities.
The primary objective of the meeting was to present IOM with a list of preventive projects to be implemented in high-risk areas across Afghanistan’s 34 provinces. These areas have been surveyed and assessed by ANDMA’s technical team and registered in the authority’s database. A list of 4,500 projects with completed preliminary surveys, along with 440 additional projects for which surveys, designs, and cost estimations have been finalized, was handed over to the IOM representative for implementation.
Mr. Hamed Burhan, IOM’s Disaster Risk Reduction Officer, expressed appreciation for ANDMA’s leadership, particularly for their extensive cooperation in implementing preventive projects and other humanitarian activities. He noted that IOM plans to implement 99 disaster risk reduction projects across various provinces in coordination with ANDMA. He further stated that the list of 4,500 projects would be shared with IOM’s leadership and subsequently with donors, and future preventive projects across the country would be implemented based on this list.
In conclusion, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to bilateral cooperation in disaster management and emphasized the importance of enhanced coordination to provide timely assistance to vulnerable and affected communities.
